SHARKBITE’S DAY AT THE BEACH

Highly promising first season sire, Sharkbite, provided the catch of the day on Sunday with an outstanding debut performance by Recife Beach in the Sky Racing World 2YO Handicap over 1000m at Wyong.
Trained by Kim Waugh (right), the flashy bay eased in betting but not in effort, racing away to score comfortably for Blake Shinn, defeating a sharp field: among them the odds on favourite, Countryman, who had run second to subsequent Group Two winner, Scandiva, at his previous start.
Not surprisingly, Waugh has a huge opinion of the youngster who is out of the Spartacus mare, Brookton Flash, a 4-time winning half sister to multiple Group One winner Sincero.
Happily for the owners – which include Kim’s husband, former test cricketer Mark Waugh – the trainer believes Recife Beach is right up to black type and, judging by the manner of his win at Wyong, it would definitely appear to be on the agenda.
